Advice About World Cup Football & Your Wedding Day
Balancing the Big Game with Your Big Day
Every few years, the summer brings not just wedding season, but major sporting events like the World Cup, Euros, or Wimbledon. And occasionally, those big matches fall right in the middle of someone’s wedding day.
As a Wedding Host / Master of Ceremonies and DJ in Essex, I’ve been part of weddings where this situation has come up more than once. Whether it’s England in a knockout match or a big club final, it can leave couples wondering:
“Should we show the football at our wedding?”
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but after more than 30 years in the wedding industry, I’ve seen every version of how it can play out.
Option 1: Keep the Football Out of the Wedding
You’ve spent months (or years) planning your perfect day, so it’s completely understandable if you don’t want the match to feature at all.
It’s your wedding, not a match day.
If you choose this route, be clear with guests beforehand so expectations are set. The day will still be incredible, and honestly, most guests are happy to focus on celebrating you.
Just be aware that a few guests might sneak off to find a TV or check scores on their phones. It’s rare, but it happens.
Option 2: Have a “Halfway” Approach
This is the compromise that often works best. You don’t make the match the focus, but you understand that some guests may want to watch it.
If there’s a bar area or side room with a TV, you can let people know they’re welcome to pop in and check the score. Meanwhile, the rest of your guests can continue with the reception and enjoy the music, food, and drinks.
It keeps everyone happy, and when the final whistle blows, the party comes straight back to life.
Option 3: Embrace It and Make It Fun
If the timing fits and you know your guests are big football fans, you could go all-in and show the match as part of the day.
I’ve DJ’d at weddings where the couple provided a big screen, and everyone watched together with drinks in hand. When England scored, the atmosphere was electric, and when the match ended, the party lifted straight off again.
Handled well, it can actually bring people together and give your day an unforgettable moment.
As your Wedding DJ and MC, I can make this option work seamlessly, introducing the game, keeping the mood upbeat during breaks, and building energy so that when it’s over, the dancefloor fills instantly.
My Professional Advice
If football might overlap with your wedding, think about your guests, your priorities, and the tone you want for your day.
For most couples, Option 2 or Option 3 tends to work best.
Guests stay happy, the atmosphere remains relaxed, and your day still feels like your day.
After all, a wedding is about celebration, and whether that’s a final whistle or the last dance, it’s those moments of shared joy that everyone remembers most.
